Cellphone and tablet users take advantage of a solar powered charging station in Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York

Cellphone and tablet users take advantage of a solar powered charging station in Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York on their first day of operation, Tuesday, June 18, 2013. The stations, provided by AT&T in a pilot program, allow New Yorkers and visitors to charge their devices, up to six at each station. Twenty-five stations are planned in public parks as part of the program being left at the various locations three to four weeks at a time. They will be placed in parks such at Union Square, Fort Greene, Hudson River and on Coney Island and Rockaway Beach among other locations. A smartphone can be charged in two hours or a 30 percent charge in 30 minutes. (© Richard B. Levine)
