Themiddle room, a lofty apartment, supported by pillars, isthe exchange, and common thoroughfare to the publicoffices. From this central room or Merchants Exchange, is aflight of winding stairs, leading to a suit of apartments,in the second story. Directly over the Post-Office is theHall of the Common Council, in which they ordinarilymeet on public business. In the opposite end of thebuilding is the Hall of the Mayor and Aldermen. Inthis room the chief Magistrate of the city, togetherwith the City Clerk, remain through the day, in thedischarge of their ordinary duties.
