Peanut worm head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a peanut worm (Phascolion sp.). This unsegmented marine worm possesses an introvert organ (not seen) behind its mouth (upper centre), a long contractile organ which is used for burrowing in sand or mud on the ocean floor. It is withdrawn into the body cavity when not in use. Peanut worms feed on detritus or microscopic organisms. When disturbed, they contract into a peanut-like shape, hence their common name.
