H. , POTTERY, ANDEAETHENWAEE. Experiments on the Manufacture of Crac/,-lr Lauth and G. Dntailh. linll. Sac Chim., Paris, 49,948—95G. The term crackle is applied to porcelain, t)te alaze ofwhich is oraektd all oier regularly in such a manner as toproduce upon the surAici* a sort of network. The crackleis due to the difference .between the coefficient of expansionof the ;jlaze and of the paste, so that after the paste hasbeen glazed at a hijjh temperature, as the two substancesdo not contract equally, upon cooling, the .surface of thearticle will be covered with a number of minute fissures orcracks. This takes place either because the baking of thepaste and glaze has not been properly performed, or becausethe paste and the glaze are not in harmony. With regard to the heating
