Refrigerator recycling. Refrigerator being lifted by a crane. A crusher (green, centre right) will crush and shred the steel for reuse. Prior to crushing the compressor, coolant (refrigerant) and polyurethane foam are removed. The coolant and foam contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) chemicals. CFCs are harmful gases that deplete the ozone layer and can trap heat in the atmosphere, which may contribute to the greenhouse effect. Ozone protects life on Earth by blocking the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. International agreements have banned production and encouraged destruction of CFCs. Photographed in West Sussex, England.
