An inner courtyard, situated between the ancient Abbey andthe more modern building, appears to have formed part of theburying-ground of the monks. A few years ago three skeletonswere unearthed here ; as there were no traces of coffins, and nochalice or paten was found buried with them, it is supposed thatthey were the remains of lay or serving brothers, and not ofpriests or actual monks. They were reinterred in the same place, and it is to be hoped that their ghosts will never disturb theslumbers of the Abbeys present THE ABBEY FROM THE GARDEN
