It is of interest to note that Ensign Hartley reports the greatappreciation of what the Americans have done for them, which hasbeen shown by the inhabitants of LAber Vrach. Although theyhave but the scantiest means, they have erected a monument tothe Americans who lost their lives, and have issued a little historyof their exploits for the native children to remember. He fitted for collegeat the Fay School, Southboro, Mass., and at St. Georges School,Newport, At St. Georges School he was captain of the base-ball and basket-ball teams, and received the athletic prize. Heentered Princeton University with the class of 1918, and was half-back on the football team during his freshman year. He left college to enlist in the at Newport, , onMarch 24, 1917. He served on the Coast Patrol, Celeritas,off Newport, , until Sept., 1917. On Sept. 13 he was trans-ferred to the Aviation Corps, and on Oct. 15 ordered to the GroundSchool, , for instruction.
