Koses will do well in any ordinary fertile ground, but are much improved in fragrance and beauty by rich soil, liberal manuring and good cul- tivation The ground should be well spaded and pulverized to the depth of a foot or more, and enriched by digging in any fertilizing material that may be convenient. Well rotted cow manure is the best and always to be preferred. Kext to this ranks ground bore as a fertilizer for Roses but it must be absolutely free from acids or other deleterious substances. If there is any choice of soil, a strong loam is the best but when this cannot be had any other good soil will answer. When a bed is to be especially prepared for Roses, a thick layer of old sods cut up in pieces, with a few inches of fine soil on the top is the best possible material that can be used. PLANTING IN BEDSâRoses appear to the best advantage when planted inbtdsor mas.'es by themjelves; they she uld not be mixed with other flowers when it can be avoided. The bed should be in a sunny place, free from shade and exposed to lull light and air. HOW TO PLANTâWhen the ground is thoroughly preparedâfine and in nice conditionâwet the roots of the roses so that the earth will adhere to them, make holes of suitable size, put in the plant slightly deep
