Vintage portrait photo of American boxer Joe Choynski (1868 - 1943) - a leading heavyweight fighter of the late 19th and early 20th century. Choynski, son of a Jewish Polish immigrant in San Francisco, fought professionally between 1888 and 1904 and was nicknamed "Chrysanthemum Joe". Little more than a middleweight in stature, Choynski regularly took on much bigger heavyweights and although he never fought for the world heavyweight title he had a string of notable bouts including a five round draw with future champion Bob Fitzsimmons in 1894 and a 20 round draw with Jim Jeffries, another future champion, in 1897. Choynski also famously knocked out Jack Johnson, who was destined to later become the first black World Heavyweight Champion, in three rounds in 1901. Photo circa 1910.
