It is evident that theimage of whichever is farthest from you and from the surface ofthe screen will move the faster. If the needle moves across thebone, its position is deeper than the bone; if the bone moves acrossthe needle, the latters position must be between the surface andthe Fig. 36.—Localization of Bullet in the Armby Wire Letters. 56 THE RONTGEN EAYS Should the needle appear stationary, place a pointer againstthe image on the screen and ascertain whether it moved a little ornot at all. Verify these results by reversing the hand and repeat-ing the manoeuvres. A little practice enables one to give as nearan estimate of the needles real depth as any surgeon could require, and such suggestions as just beneath the skin of the palm/ lower and between bones/ upper end | of an inch betweenthe skin of the back of the hand are in my experience sufficientfor any operator. The needles depth being ascertained, it only remains to findits position in the horizontal planes—a task which represents fewdifficulties. When found, this position should be marked upon theskin. The advantages of this method are its rapidity of perform-ance, the process taking but a few seconds, and the economy of thematerial both photographic and electr
