Major Lanoe Hawker was a leading figure in the development and use of fighter aircraft in the Royal Flying Corps. In 1915 he was awarded the Victoria Cross after destroying two German aircraft in one day. Hawker was killed in November 1916 by the German ‘Ace’ Manfred von Richtofen
