Black and white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) sitting on a branch. All lemurs are endemic to Madagascar, where they evolved in isolation from other primates after Madagascar became geographically isolated from Africa. These lemurs can weigh up to kilograms and measure 60 centimetres in length. Although living in family groups, they feed alone on fruits, leaves and seeds. Photographed in the Montagne des Francais Reserve, northern Madagascar.
