Commemorative printing medallions. 1930s medallions commemorating the Stanhope Press (top) and the French scholar, translator and printer Etienne Dolet (1509-1546, bottom). The Stanhope Press was the first iron printing press, invented by the British scientist Charles Stanhope (1753-1816). Dolet was a controversial figure who was imprisoned in 1542 on the charge of atheism and burned with his books. Photographed in Toulouse.
