Battle of Curzola


The Battle of Curzola (today Korcula) was fought on September 9, 1298, between the fleets of Genoa and Venice, one of many fought over rights to Mediterranean and Middle East trade. According to a later tradition, Marco Polo was one of the Venetians taken prisoner. And, it was while he was imprisoned in a Genoese jail that he dictated the account of his travels in China to his cellmate, Rustichello.
