Colonic diverticula. Endoscope view of diverticula in the wall of the colon, the largest part of the large intestine. Diverticula are small pouches in the lining of the colon. A blood vessel (pink bulge) is seen in the diverticulum at lower left. Exposed blood vessels may become damaged, leading to colonic bleeding. The formation of diverticula is thought to be linked to a low-fibre diet, and they are very common in the elderly. Usually they cause no symptoms, although if a blood vessel is exposed and subsequently damaged, there may be lower abdominal pain and blood in the faeces.
