A memorial stone to the American author Henry James who lived Lamb House Rye from 1897 until his death in 1914. The house is now open to the public.
Lamb house was built in 1722 by James Lamb, a wealthy wine merchant. Apart from being the residence of the author Henry James, it is equally well known as the residence of EF Benson who wrote the Mapp and Lucia novels, although the latter referred to the house by the name of Mallards. The house is curently owned by The National Trust, it being gifted to them in 1950 by the widow of Henry James' nephew. It is open to visitors. Henry James lived there from 1897 - 1914
