North front with Ionic portico The present house was originally built for Dalhousie Weatherstone circa 1790 before being improved by Sir William Miller using some of a fortune made trading with Russia during the Crimean War It was then largely reconstructed by the architect John Kinross for his son Sir James Miller who married the Honourable Eveline Curzon daughter of Lord Scarsdale who had been brought up at Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire a Robert Adam masterpiece When asked how much he could spend Kinross was told quote it simply doesnt matter unquote The sumptuous interiors and famous silver staircase bear witness to his largesse The work was completed in 1905 a year before Sir James death and is seen as the epitome of the Edwardian country house in all its opulence
