An old engraving of using ‘Nonkreem’ bellows in an early smelting foundry in northern India. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. These bellows were used in smelting iron-containing sand over charcoal fires. The double-action bellows here are worked by a man and a woman standing on them. The flaps are raised by hand and expanded by using their feet. A tube made from bamboo concentrating the blasts of air from the bellows through a small hole cut in a piece of stone and on to the fire containing the sand for smelting. The resulting lumps of iron are seen bottom left.

The resulting lumps of iron are seen bottom left. These could be reheated, then hammered and shaped into useful implements.
