Epstein-Barr virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of Epstein Barr virus (EBV) particles, members of the herpesvirus group. EBV was isolated during attempts to locate a virus responsible for Burkitt's lymphoma, a malignant tumour affecting children in parts of Africa. In 1964, Epstein & Barr detected the herpesvirus in cell cultures from lymphoma tissue. The virus was also found to cause glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis), after a technician working with EBV developed the disease & was observed to produce antibodies to EBV during her illness.
