The Victorian pier (completed 1889, miles long) has survived several serious fires including one in 1959. This photo taken April 1994 after the pier had re-opened in 1990 and before it was closed again by fire in June 1995, and again in October 2005 when the amusement arcade and adjacent buildings were destroyed by suspected arson.
