A gondolier paddles his gondola towards one of Venice’s most prominent landmarks, Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute with several palaces on the Canal Grande (Grand Canal) in the Veneto Region of northern Italy. The church is built of Baroque architecture, and constructed in 1631 during a massive plaque outbreak that killed many Venetians. The Venetian Senate agreed that a church would be built in honour of the Virgin for saving the city from the plague.
