The hoisting drum is of largediameter, grooved for steel wire Independent thrusting engines are employed to feed thei to its work. By their use the cranesnian has absolutecontrol of the dipper and can cause it to fill every time whilein a proper hank. These engines are solidly built with bed-plate in one piei and well bolted to the boom. The gearingis of steel and the engines are reversing1 by means of centralvalve. Independent reversible engines are employed forswinging, a duplicate of those on the boom for thrusting, anddouble-geared to a drum. The drum carries double steel wireropes on each side, which are connected to the turntable. In this shovel there is room for a first-class locomotiveboiler, and the greatest care is bestowed upon its design andworkmanship. It is large enough for a locomotive of twice. Itis built for a working pressure of 140 lbs., which more nearlyaccords with locomotive practice than has been usual on steamshovels, and which conduces to economy as well as speed andpower. The shovel is mounted on two all-steel trucks of diamondpattern specially designed for the purpose and having a largeex< ess of strength over the requirements. The axles are of besthammered iron with -M C. B. standard journal boxes. Inebolster is formed of a steel box girder composed of two with steel plate top and bottom. The main arch barsare 6 ins. wide. The rear truck is fitted with hand brakes. The shovel illustrated is working on the New York Central& Hudson River Railroad and frequently loads 10 cars (100cu. yds. i in 8 minutes.
