CHAPTER X FRIGHT OF NATIVES ON FIRST SEEING A HORSE. The Mission at Nandi, a town on the southern coast of VanuaLevu, was commenced at the same time as that at Mbua, and has beenmaintained in the face of similar opposition, and in the midst of thesame horrible cruelties and terrors of cannibalism and war. Operationshere, as at Mbua, were commenced and carried on for a time fromViwa. Great good was done by the labours of the devoted nativeTeacher Joel Pulu ; but the visits of the Missionaries were, of neces-sity, few and far between. Mr. Hunt had induced the people tobuild a Mission-house in a village where most of the Christians resided,and on the 9th of November, 1847, the Station was occupied by twoMissionaries,—the Eev. John VVatsford, who had been Avorking atViwa and Ono, and the Rev. James Ford, who had just arrived fromEngland.
