A Windshield Designed to Exclude Rain A WINDSHIELD designed to exclude rain, snow andcold air has recently been devised by W. D. shield consists of two-glass sash and a sun-visorarranged in the manner shown in Fig. 1. When set inthe position shown the air stream is deflected upwardover the top of the vehicle, and is said to carry with it. Fig. 1 rain and snow and also to ventilate the enclosure backof the shield by drawing air outward in the manner in-dicated by the arrows. Gutters placed at the loweredges of the visor and the upper ^ash carry off to theside any water which runs into them. When in theposition shown, the clear opening is about 2 in. Another design of windshield, calledthe down-draft pattern, is shewndiagrammatically in Fig. 2. This iscomposed of three-glass sash and asun-visor set, for use in stormyweather, in the position shown. Aircarrying snow or rain is said to bedeflected in the manner shown by thearrows without entering the spaceback of the shield. The space betweenthe two lower sash is open at the endsto permit escape of the air whichenters it. The two lower sash can befixed if desired, the upper glass onlybeing pivoted. Patents to cover both designs shownhave been allowed or are pending. TheZenite Metal Co. has been licensed tomanufacture under these patents. March 3, 19
