Beyond this the main street trends towards theriv^er. Further along, a chemists shop jostles a butchery,and a general store, a smith). The town has a Local Board,the officers of which are unpaid. The rates are lower thanthose of any other township in the Colony, and the assessedvalue of property is i^45,ii9. In addition to the Hospital and School, in the way of. institutions there are a Public Librar\- containing 2,000 xolumes,amongst which there is a good sprinkling (jf standard ^\•orks,and a full supply of periodicals and , a BenevolentSociety presided over by the ladies of the place, a \V. C. T. 131 Iliion, a (iood Tciiiplars Lodge, and Episcopalianplaces of worship, a Missionary Society, and a Volunteer Halland Corps. The headquarters for the Division, of the NatalPolice are also here, their centre being of course at theMagistracy. There is very little crime. Prices in Verulamrange about the same as in Durban. There arc two hotelsin the ])lacc, but those who object to the cup that be under no apprehension on the score of accommodation.
