A circa 1930s image of an Imperial Airlines airliner (London to Switzerland route) with passengers waiting to board. Imperial Airways was an early British commercial long-range airline principally serving the British Empire routes to South Africa, India, the Far East, Australia, Malaya and Hong Kong. The accident-prone airline operated from 1924 to 1939 and also carried air mail items. 32 people died in seven incidents during its first six years of operation. it merged with British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) in 1939.
