A treatise on the science and practice of midwifery . osure of the decidua reflexa is effected. There are some objectionsto this theory, for no one has seen the decidua reflexa incompleteand in the process of formation, and, on examining its external surface, that is, the one furthest from the ovum, its microscopical appearanceis identical with that of the inner surface of the decidua vera. Tomeet these difficulties, Weber and Groodsir, whose views have beenadopted by Priestley, contended that the decidua reflexa is theprimary lamina of the mucous membrane, which, when the ovumenters the uterus, separates in two-thirds of its extent from the layersbeneath it, to adhere to the ovum; the remaining third remainsattached, and forms a centre of nutrition. According to this viewthe decidua vera would be a subsequent growth over the separatedportion, and the decidua serotina the portion of the primary laminawhich remained attached. In this way the fact of the opposed sur-faces of the decidua vera and reflexa bein^ identical in structure Fig. An Ovum removed from Uterus, and part of the Decidua Vera cut away. (After Coste.). The difficulty which this theory is intendedto meet, does not seem so great as is supposed, for if, as is likely, itis only the epithelial or internal surface of the mucous membrane CONCEPTION AND GENERATION. 93 which sprouts over the ovum, and not its deeper layers, the facts ofthe case would be sufficiently met by Costes view. Up to the third month of pregnancy the decidua reflexa and era arenot in close contact, and there may even be a considerable interspacebetween them, which sometimes contains a small quantity of mucousfluid, called the hydroperione. This fact may account for the curiouscircumstance, of which many instances are on record, that a uterinesound may be passed into a g
