Solar photovoltaic panels on eco-friendly houses, energy efficient homes Buckshaw Village, Chorley, Lancashire, UK

Buckshaw Village, a former Ministry of Defence site near Chorley in Lancashire, The site, measuring hectares, is located to the south west of Buckshaw Village and forms part of the former Royal Ordnance Site, which was a munitions factory dating back to the 1930s. Until recently the site, known as Group One, was still operational but operations have recently ceased on the site. When the Royal Ordnance Factory was fully operational it occupied an area of 350 hectares. In 1997 following the end of the Cold War and the progressive demise of the munitions activities at the site, a Masterplan for the whole site was developed. From this Masterplan a number of developments have occurred including Buckshaw Village which occupies the core of the factory site, over 170 hectares. But it includes seven detached houses that defy expectations. Barratt Homes has included a range of features for more sustainable living such as a wind turbine, solar photovoltaic panels, geothermal ground source energy collectors, low-emission domestic generators, rainwater harvesting, ultra-absorbent insulation and broadband connections to encourage home-working. The housing industry wasn't always like this… so why have developers turned from planet-killing to tree-hugging quicker than you can say Kyoto? First, the legislators are getting tough. There are now rigorous Building Regulations, particularly those in Part L, which decree that fuel and energy conservation measures must be built into every new home.
