The Battle of Poltava on July 8,1709 was the decisive victory of Peter I of Russia over the Swedish forces under Field Marshal Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld,in one of the battles of the Great Northern War. High-ranking Swedes captured during the battle included Field Marshal Rehnskiöld,major generals Schlippenbach,Stackelberg,Hamilton and Prince Maximilian Emanuel. Peter held a celebratory banquet in two large tents erected on the battlefield. The battle also bears major importance in Ukrainian national history,as Hetman of Zaporizhian Host Ivan Mazepa sided with the Swedes,seeking to create an uprising in Ukraine against the tsardom. The Great Northern War (1700-21) was a conflict in which a coalition led by the Tsardom of Russia successfully contested the supremacy of the Swedish Empire in Central,Northern,and Eastern Europe. The war ended with Sweden's defeat,leaving Russia as the new dominant power in the Baltic region and as a new major force in European politics. In Sweden,the absolute monarchy had come to an end with the death of Charles XII,and Sweden's Age of Liberty began.
