. New elements of operative surgery . an eye-witness to, and read to andapproved of and corrected by Dr. Mott. The operation was performed between 1^ and 2§ P. M., Saturday,Nov. 23, 1844. The patient, a young gentleman by the name ofWilliam Edgar Baker, native of, and clerk in a respectable mer-cantile firm in, this city, and aged 25 years, was stout, of ratherthick set frame, full sanguine temperament, florid full face, broadneck and chest, but dark hair and eyes, and altogether inclinedto embonpoint. About a year since his uncle (present in the room after the ope-ration) told me Mr. Bakef complained of pain in the right side ofthe lower jaw which soon began to swell and so continued until itreached its present magnitude—being apparently a uniform en-largement of the whole of the middle part of the base of the jaw onthat side which, with the induration of the superincumbent tissues, periosteum, aponeurosis, fasciae and muscles, give it to the eye andfeel the form of a spindle-shaped, hard, consolidated, and apparently. EXSECTION OR EXCISION OP THE 909 almost boney or semi-cartilaginous tumor throughout, perfectly un-yielding to pressure, and about three inches through in its transversediameter, or that through its middle, and ii,ve to six inches in its lon-gitudnial diameter or that in a line with the base of the jaw taoer-ing each way as it reaches the angle of the jaw at one end andnear the symphisis ot the ch:n at the other. Dr. Mott, the first surgeon who accurately described and attempt-ed the formidable operation of exsection of a part or of the wholehalf or more of the lower jaw as the remedy for this insidious andformidable disease, and who pronounced this case to be one of thesame kind as the twelve to fifteen others for which he has operatedupon during the last twenty-six years, denominates it osteosarcoma, which left to itself terminates in a malignant morbid growth of theosseous and other structures implicated, finally resolving itself
