Neurofibroma. Close-up of a neurofibroma (lower centre) on the abdomen of a 71-year-old male patient. Neurofibromas are slow-growing benign (non-cancerous) tumours that originate in the peripheral nerve fibres. They are mainly composed of Schwann cells, fatty cells that insulate nerve fibres. Treatment is with surgical removal of the tumour.
