The Passage of North Mountain was less costly than that of theBlue Ridge : it is crossed without a tunnel. At the summit the gradereaches an elevation of 2,074 feet above tide; there are pleasant land-scape views, some of great beauty, some very rugged; and on the righttowers Elliofs Knob, 4,450 feet above the level of the sea, probably thehighest point in the State. At Goshen, thirty-two miles west of Staun-ton, and one hundred sixty-eight from Richmond, the road, after runningnearly parallel to the North Mountain for many miles, turns abruptlywestward, and passes through Panther Gap in the Mill Mountain, knownfarther north as the Shenandoah. The scenery here is wild and interest-ing.
