View NNW from Twt Hill, Caernarfon, across the Menai Strait to the Anglesey shore with Traeth Gwyllt sandbanks exposed at low tide. The Romans may have invaded Anglesey in this area in AD60 & subsequently established a crossing point from their fort at Segontium (Caernarfon). An extensive Roman settlement has been discovered at Tai Cochion near the Sea Zoo (white buildings centre). A ferry used by slate quarrymen & others ran to/from the Tal y Foel pier at the former Mermaid Inn complex (white buildings on L): paddle steamer Menna made the final run 30 July 1954.
