Basing an esti-mate of the amount of gold remaining, on the results obtained where PLACER countys MINING STORY 303 portions of the deep channels have been worked, that have given from$100 to $1,000 per lineal foot, equaling a product of from $500,000 to$1,000,000 per mile, it is evident that the amount of gold alreadyextracted is but a trifle compared with the amount of golden treasurewhich remains as a reward for well-directed capital. ,The entire surface of Placer County, from the lower plains to thesummit of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is ribbed with quartz ledges, nearly all of which have shoots of gold-bearing ore, accompanied by. Pottp:ry Works of Gladding, McBeax & Co., at Lincoln. iron pyrites and galena. The Ophir quartz district is probably themost prominent. While the district has produced upwards of $2,000,-000, the product of a score of mines, the Crater, the Hathaway, andGold Blossom are the only ones which have been worked below the300-foot level. The Rising Sun Mine, near Colfax, and the PioneerMine, near Towle, are the only examples of deep mining in easternPlacer, while innumerable quartz ledges abound throughout the entiredistrict. Water is plentiful, timber is abundant, lumber cheap, andthe ledges are accessible. Considerable attention, however, has beendirected toward the development of quartz properties during the past 304 CALIFORNIA MINES AND MINERALS two years.
