Panoramic view of Tossa de Mar in the region of La Selva, province of Gerona, Catalonia, Spain
Tossa de Mar is a Spanish municipality in the province of Gerona, in Catalonia. Belonging to the region of La Selva, it has a population of 5,930 inhabitants (INE 2021). It is located on the Costa Brava. Marc Chagall baptized it with the name "Blue Paradise" after his summer stay in 1933 and 1934. In 1950, Ava Gardner and James Mason came to the small town to film Pandora and the Flying Dutchman and that gave the town some fame. In the film the town was baptized as Esperanza. The town was also immortalized in Spanish cinema in 1977, when the musical film Lend it to me tonight (premiere: 1978) with Manolo Escobar was shot there. Even though various bullfights have been held in this municipality in portable bullrings, Tosa de Mar was the first town in Spain to declare itself an anti-bullfighting city, in 1990. This example has been followed by many other towns, especially in Catalonia.
