An old engraving of an aerial railway in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This rather fanciful vehicle is based on a cigar-shaped balloon, driven by steam power. its wheels travel on wires attached to posts (wire-way). In this design it was intended that the hot air in the balloon made the vehicle lighter – it was envisaged by an inventor named Fontaine in 1867.
