The high-pressure pipe line, which has been extended overan area of 1 70 acres in the business district (completed 1912),is the latest device and the most modern auxiliary of the fire-fighting establishment of the City. The pipe line system consists of three powerful pumps, whichforce Vv^ater through large pipes at tremendous pressure. Thesepipes are, of course, all underground, but are tapped at inter-vals of 1 70 feet and connected with hydrants that bring thewater to the surface. The hydrants, which are depressed be-low the sidewalk and protected by covers that can be easilyremoved, are systematically placed through the down-towndistrict.
