President Taft succeededin getting the conference committee to make a few reductionsand to insert a provision levying an income tax on corpora-tions, and he also proposed as part of the agreement a con-stitutional amendment providing for a general income measure caused a split in the Republican party, sevenRepublican senators and twenty Republican representativesvoting against it.
