U Pankstraße Underground U-Bahn railway station serves the U8 line of the commuter rail network, Gesundbrunnen,Mitte-Berlin,Germany The station opened on 5 October 1977 when the line was extended from Gesundbrunnen to Osloer Straß the name is derived from its location. It is situated under the intersection of Pankstraße and Badstraße. The spelling of the station's name is under debate as the signs inside the station are ‘Pankstrasse’ and the correct German orthographic form would be ‘Pankstraße’ It was designed by architect Rainer ümmler and has brown tiled walls and aluminium cladding on supports. The station is under renovation at present. Like the Siemensdamm U-Bahn station, the station is constructed as a ‘Multi Purpose Facility’. It is prepared and partially stocked to be used as an NBC shelter in the event of war or natural disasters. It has an emergency kitchen and a filtered ventilation system and is designed to sustain 3339 people for 14 days. The facilities can be visited as part of guided tours organized by the Berliner Unterwelten association The subway station and the civil protection facility have been listed as historical monuments since 2011
