This probably saved his life, for, ashe was in the middle of the Wjmd, the south part of thebridge fell. By this serious accident the progress of buildingin the New Town was somewhat delayed, but in 1772 thebridge was finally opened for traffic. In the following year Mr. Ferguson, already mentioned, who had, in 1762, acquired the rights retained by Cleland, formed a plan of erecting buildings, in the form of a square, upon his area adjoining the Register Office. AT THE BACK OF ST. JAMESS SQUARE 171 and spade. ^ Following upon the success of Mr. Fergusonsdefence the first street of houses was built on Clelands Yardsby Mr. Gray, on the south side of South St. Jamess Street, in1775. While the foundation-stone was being laid a salutewas fired from the Castle to celebrate the victory of theBritish forces over the revolted Americans at BunkersHiU, and hence the street was at first known as BunkersHilV East St. Jamess Street was known as Gray Street aslate as 1796, the origin of the name being obvious. advertised his ground to feu in five lots in April1786. It appears probable that Catherine Street and SwintonRow, in which he had rights, were named after Mrs. CatherineSwinton, his wife. As the Yards were quickly covered with houses, the oldmansion was overshadowed and hemmed in by the hightenements which soon surrounded it. Now that the oldhouse has disappeared
