It must beborne in mind that although there are communications between theselarger arteries at the base, there are none between the branches afterthey have plunged into the cerebral substance, and that these latter,therefore, are terminal arteries. The optic chiasm, the cranial nerves,the pons, the medulla oblongata, are thus supplied directly fromthe arteries of the circle of Willis without any intervention of thearteries coming from the pia mater.
