Budhanilkantha Temple is also known as the Narayanthan Temple, and can be identified by a large reclining statue of Lord Mahavishnu. Called the Sleeping Vishnu, or Jalakshayan Narayan, the statue depicts the deity reclining on the twisting coils of the cosmic serpent Shesha. An open-air temple containing the statue of sleeping Vishnu floating in a small pond resembling the cosmic ocean surrounded by twisting coils of Snake. It is said to be carved from a single block of black basalt stone of unknown origin. The statue of sleeping Vishnu itself is tall sculpture 5 meters in length.
