Macomber,was born in Oakham, November 11, 1797, son of John Macomber whocame to Oakham before February 11, 1795. His mother was AbigailFobes, daughter of Jonathan and Susan Crawford Packard. father was descended from Ichabod Packard, a soldier inthe French and Indian wars and in the Revolution, who came to Oakham. Her mother was Susan Crawford, daughterof Alexander and Bethiah (Willis) Crawford, and granddaughter ofCapt. John Crawford of the Revolutionary Army. John J. Macomber, thefather of George, had thirteen children, five of whom (John, George,James, Henry, and William) served as soldiers in the Civil War. Abigail,their only daughter, was the wife of William R. Barr of the Mass. was graduated at Yale College in 1863. Luther went in early lifeto the Sandwich Islands, where he had a plantation; he had nine children,one of whom served in the U. S. Army in Porto Rico in the war withSpain. George B. Macomber was prepared for college at MonsonAcademy and was graduated from Amherst with the Class of1862. Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the 34thMass. At the organization
