Grey crowned crane. (Balearica regulorum). Both sexes have the fan-like crest on top of their heads which gives this bird its name. This bird is found throughout southern and eastern Africa, inhabiting marshes and wet grassland. It feeds on plants, seeds, insects and other small invertebrates. The grey crowned crane, which can grow up to metres tall, is unusual amongst cranes as it often roosts in trees and not on the ground. Photographed at Hamburg Zoo in Germany.
