A resolution ofthe growth on the sur-face of the oesophagusmay be induced withlittle or no marked sloughinghas occurred, the heal-ing process which followsmay lead to a cicatricialnarrowing of the oesoph-agus, which will ineffect be as harmful asthe original stricture dueto the presence of thegrowth. This cicatricial stricture can, however, be treated by the passageof bougies, and dilated from time to time. The dilatation may be broughtabout by passing a Brunning tube past the stricture. This can be donein the course of the repeated examinations, which should always followafter healing has been brought Fig. 244.—Shows radium tube in situ, for the treatment of carci-noma of the oesophagus, situated close to the cricoid cartilage. RADIUM IN CANCER OF THE RECTUM, THEPROSTATE GLAND, AND THE BLADDER In Cancer of the Rectum Symptoms may be relieved for a time. The tube containing theradium must be passed into the stricture, otherwise it may act as anirritant to the healthy mucous membrane and increase the distressingsymptoms so common in this situation. Emphasis must be laid on thepoint that it is absolutely essential that the tubes be placed in the midstof the growth. This can only be done when the lumen of the bowelis still patent and the growth involves the whole bowel. The growth 376 RADIATION THERAPEUTICS of 2 shrinks, and the function of the bowel may be restored for a time if asufficient quantity of radium is used and a long enough exposure is given. The results obtained in the treat-ment of this disease are disappointing, lar
