The dilator varies in length fromone to three inches. The wire should be bent as desired, then tempered to givesufficient power, and heavily silver or gold-plated. This makes it perfectlyclean—in other words, renders it safe. The first instrument I made by simplytaking a hair pin and bending it into the required shape ; this was used shortlyafterward, being scraped and cleansed thoroughly with soap and water, and in-troduced with a plain dressing forceps, the uterus being steadied by a tenaculum. This primitive instrument, of course is very much less effective, and aptto be even dangerous on account of its non-elasticity and possible accumulationof rust, whereas the present instrument is both yielding and aseptic.
