African Penguin Spheniscus demersus at Boulders Beach, Simonstown, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

The African Penguin Spheniscus demersus, also known as the Jackass Penguin because of its donkey-like braying, is endemic to Namibia and South Africa. It is listed in the Red Data Book as a vulnerable species. Their diet consists mainly of squid and shoaling fish species such as anchovies and sardines (pilchards). Their distinctive black and white colouring is a vital camouflage against predators such as Cape fur seals and killer whales.
