Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddelli) basking on ice. The Weddell seal inhabits fast ice (sea ice that is joined to the land) around Antarctica and the subantarctic islands. It is protected from the cold by a thick layer of blubber. It hunts under the ice, breathing from air holes that it creates with its teeth. It hunts up to three kilometres from its hole, feeding on fish, crustaceans, squid and krill. It can reach over 3 metres in length and over 450 kilograms in weight.
