On an island in the inner group of the StockholmArchipelago (all-in-all there are 200 islands) there is ayellow-washed cottage on a rocky slope close by the is surrounded by tall trees. One could not think of having a conventional gardenhere, where one had to roll the boulders aside anddig up old roots in order to plant anything at all. Onlythose roots, tree-stumps, and stones that proved actuallydecorative were permitted to remain. The largest andmost unwieldly naturally had to be left, and formed the boundary for thegarden. Wherever aboulder was rolledaway, the hollowwas filled with richsoil. Thus excel-lent places for thenew plants weresoon ready.
