Overlapping galaxies. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the overlapping galaxies NGC 3314a and NGC 3314b. The larger background galaxy (NGC 3314b) is partially obscured by the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 3314a. Dark dust lanes in the fore- ground galaxy are silhouetted against the bright galaxy behind it. This system will aid the study of the galactic distribution of dark matter. NGC 3314a is thought to be around 115 million light years from Earth, with NGC 3314b some 25 million light years behind it. They lie in the constellat- ion Hydra. Image made in April 1999 from data from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on the HST.
